World Literacy Foundation Joins Forces with Amazon, Edsoma, and Follet Higher Education to Create ‘World Literacy Taskforce’
The global body is established to help marginalized children receive technological resources needed to develop reading and literacy skill.
The World Literacy Foundation, a global non-profit organization striving to guarantee that every child, regardless of geographic location, has the opportunity to acquire literacy skills and books to reach their full potential, today announced the creation of the World Literary Taskforce. The Taskforce is a body of renowned technology, consulting, and educational experts that are pooling their resources to ensure that marginalized children receive valuable resources to develop their reading and literacy skills. A study by the World Literacy Foundation found low levels of literacy skills could cost the U.S. as much $300 billion a year. According to the U.S. Department of Education, about 130 million people lack proficiency in literacy, reading below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level. Literacy is correlated with several important outcomes such as personal income, employment levels, health, and overall economic growth.
The Taskforce is focused on children who are progressing into their adult lives and careers. The body focuses on marginalized children who lack educational resources and mentoring. This initiative collaborates with corporate partners who share the vision of bridging the digital divide by giving all children, no matter their economic situation, the opportunity to raise their wellbeing and potential for economic opportunities through the joy of reading. Education technology is key to scaling up the ability to reach the millions of children worldwide who need resources in order to read and write at a level commensurate with their age and established educational standards. We’re proud to announce the taskforce members who have come together on this mission with the World Literacy Foundation: Amazon, Edsoma, and Follett Higher Education.
“The Taskforce is proud to work with the US corporate sector to stem illiteracy, and support people from marginalized communities,” said World Literacy Foundation’s Joseph Ghaly. “The Taskforce is running projects in New York and Boston and plans to roll out to another 8 US cities over 2024.”
Edsoma, an AI-powered reading assistant technology designed to enhance literacy skills in real-time, is a critical aspect of the initiative. Backed by Shaquille O’Neal, the advanced word recognition technology identifies spoken words and checks pronunciation, ensuring a student never makes a reading mistake again. “Proficient reading skills are the most important determinative factor to unlocking potential throughout one’s life and intervening early in a child’s development to ensure they’re on the right path is the best way to optimize long term success. Edsoma works hand-in-hand with students and teachers using advanced artificial intelligence and proven methodologies to close the achievement gap, helping students learn to love reading and realize their goals.”
To complement the Taskforce’s software and consulting expertise, Amazon is committed to providing 500 devices per month of indispensable hardware devices on a needs basis for deployment at schools around the United States.
“We’re dedicated to shaping the future with pioneering technology, and programs that give students affordable, convenient access to course materials,” said Will Crawford Director Follet Higher Education. “The World Literacy Taskforce speaks directly to our core mission and together, we will implement big ideas that drive success for all students, no matter their socioeconomic background.”
