What is International Literacy Day and how can I get involved?
Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) on September 8th has been celebrated annually around the globe. The aim of ILD is to promote the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
International Literacy Day is an opportunity for communities, NGOs, governments and civil society to celebrate literacy. ILD also allows us to reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges. The matter of literacy is a key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This is the most important day on the World Literacy Foundation’s calendar. We’re able to celebrate and promote the power of literacy with the international community in the most empowering ways.
This year’s theme is ‘Literacy and Skills Development’. This will explore ways to make effective connections between literacy and technical and vocational skills in policies, practice, systems and governance. On ILD, we will run a series of special events in communities, schools and universities around the world to promote literacy and its importance.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Local libraries, reading clubs, storytelling groups are always in need of volunteers! Why not donate your time to empower young children through the power of literacy and reading. Contact your nearest library to see what opportunities available.
