September 8th marks International Literacy Day– a day to applaud the progress we have made, and renew our focus on the work that still needs to be done. This year's theme; ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’ reflects the increasing importance of literacy across languages.
International Literacy Day serves as a reminder of how important literacy is for individuals and society. It’s also a date to reflect on issues that arise with global illiteracy and the work being done towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Literacy impacts people’s ability to learn a second language and how they can connect with the world. When basic reading, writing, and comprehension skills are not developed due to a lack of childhood education, it can be a real struggle to communicate and learn a new language.
