Literacy facts in the UK:

  • 25% of British children aged 5 years struggle with basic vocabulary
  • 7 million adults are functionally illiterate
  • Cost of illiteracy to the UK economy is estimated at $50 billion USD

World Literacy Foundation runs local programs in the UK, such as:

  • Parent mentoring and tutoring services
  • Delivers literacy resources and distributes children’s books; including bilingual baby books and a literacy pack to new mothers from non-English speaking backgrounds.

SOME OUTCOMES 2017 – 2018
  • We ran 26 local projects consisting of book distributions, fundraising events, and Sun Books related activities.
  • We engaged 34 schools to participate in International Literacy Day activities.
  • We empowered over 40 Youth Ambassadors to work collaboratively in their communities and schools for literacy.
