27% of non-literate people live in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the cost of a children’s book can be a month’s salary. Millions of classrooms in Africa are located ‘off the grid’ and have limited educational resources and no books.
The World Literacy Foundation under the initiative called Sun Books has designed and developed an App an which is preloaded in a solar-powered device. It contains digital content and local and e-books in English and the local language, that are provided to classrooms for early primary level children along with training to teachers involved.
The use of the device will be effective regardless of the access to the internet or electricity, this is important in territories such as Uganda where only 26.7% of the population has access to electricity, and the Internet connectivity is limited, in other cases unstable and low-speed.
At the moment our team is based in Gulu – Uganda and we are expanding the project into other locations in Africa. Learn more www.sunbooks.org
