As a lover of books and explorer of imaginative worlds…
What if you weren’t allowed to read books anymore?
What if you’re banned from reading…
Because you’re a girl?
That’s exactly what’s happening to bright, curious young girls like 12-year-old Yashfa in Afghanistan.
Because in 2022, the Afghan government banned books for girls.
Along with secondary education for girls.
No school. No books. How are these girls going to develop the love of reading and literacy skills that are so important for their futures?
“Since the banning of books in my town, I am losing hope for my future dreams of an education and a better future. I wish to be able to read books again.” Says Yashfa, a previously hardworking young learner.
Your kindness and generous donation today helps grant that wish for books to girls like Yashfa.
How? Through underground book clubs!
Girls like Yashfa are so eager to read that they’re joining underground book clubs around Kabul to share what books they can.
A group of eight brave girls (whose names and faces we can’t disclose or show) founded these book clubs.
Like you, they’re passionate book lovers. But while you can spend your leisure time and weekends freely reading the literature you love…
These brave young girls hold reading sessions in secret locations to avoid retribution. They risk fines and other persecution if they’re caught.
When you give today, you support the World Literacy Foundation’s on-the-ground book distribution team. This is made up of 30 local Afghan Youth Ambassadors who are determined to bring books to their peers – regardless of the ban. GIVE BOOKS NOW.
If you believe in books for all girls, this is what your gift can do:
If you believe in books for all girls, this is what your gift can do:
Together, you and I can stand up against this discriminatory book ban against girls in Afghanistan.
From one book lover to another, thank you for giving books to these brave girls. They just want the same rights as the boys – the chance to read and enjoy books.
I want to read…
The most challenging part of our daily experience is that we see how other girls at the same age of us are attending their schools around the world but we have no other option instead of staying at home and watching our dark future. There are many reasons that we want to learn, I am mentioning a few of them here:
If I could have access to books again…
I am hopeful and sometimes it seems impossible, I am hopeful that one day these challenging moments will get over and I will go back to school with friends. If I had enough books, a laptop I would try to join online classes and would try to motivate other girls and after I finished my books I would give them to other girls and would encourage them to study and be hopeful.
I want to read…
It’s so much fun being a kid, but sometimes I face a few challenges. One of the tough things is when my older siblings or friends read really cool stuff, and I feel left out because I can’t join in on the fun. Sometimes, understanding instructions or following stories in school can also be hard for me.
I really want to learn how to read better or improve my reading skills because I see my friends having a blast when they read amazing books and comics. I want to join them in all those exciting adventures too! Reading seems like a special power that helps you learn so many cool things about the world. It’s like being able to explore anything you want in your own secret way.
Also, I want to be more independent and not have to ask my parents or teachers to read things for me all the time. I’m ready to practice and work hard to become a great reader! It’s like finding a treasure chest full of fantastic stories and knowledge, and I’m super excited to start this journey!
If I could have access to books again.
It would be super cool to read exciting stories, learn about different places and animals, and even explore magical worlds in fantasy books. I also hope to become more confident in my abilities and feel proud of myself for being able to read on my own.
If I had access to suitable books that match my age and reading level, it would open up a whole new world for me! I could dive into interesting adventures, laugh with funny characters, and maybe even learn cool facts about space, dinosaurs, or other cool topics. Reading suitable books would help me grow my vocabulary, improve my understanding of different subjects, and boost my imagination.
It would also make me feel included and less left out when my friends talk about the books they love. I could join in on the fun and share my own favorite stories with them too. Plus, I wouldn’t have to rely on others to read to me, and I could explore the joy of reading all by myself.
Having access to suitable books would be like having a treasure trove of knowledge and fun right at my fingertips. I’m super excited about the possibilities, and I can’t wait to see what amazing adventures and discoveries reading will bring to my life.

Literacy is not just about reading and writing; it's about empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and transforming societies. Whether referred to as International Literacy Day, World Literacy Day, or National Literacy Day, the message remains clear: literacy is the key to unlocking potential and fostering global progress.

Health and Well-being: Literacy is linked to better health outcomes, as it enables individuals to understand healthcare information, make healthy choices, and access medical services.
Peace and Stability: An educated population is more likely to engage in peaceful dialogue and contribute to the overall stability of societies.
Promoting Literacy: A Collaborative Effort

It empowers individuals to dream, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society. By promoting literacy and ensuring access to quality education for all, we invest in a brighter future where every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
