Ikechukwu’s Journey as a WLF Youth Ambassador

Ikechukwu’s Journey as a WLF Youth Ambassador

I’m Ikechukwu William Obiorah, hailing from Nigeria. I advocate for youth and literacy, especially for the education of underprivileged children and teenagers.

My experience as a 2023 WLF Youth Ambassador has been transformative. It began with my mother’s unwavering support for my creative writing, despite her limited formal education. Overcoming financial challenges, I became the first in my family to graduate from university. Growing up amid domestic violence and economic hardships, I championed wealth creation and recognized the transformative power of skills in combating global poverty.

My dedication to language and literature led to publications in over 50 esteemed international journals and anthologies, showcasing my passion for language and literature. In 2020/2021, Sweetycat Press, U.S., recognized me as a young distinguished creative writer, featuring my work in the ‘Who’s Who of Emerging Writers’ Book Worldwide. My debut novel, ‘The Black Python Empire,’ was acknowledged in ‘The Book of Books’ (2020) by Sweetycat Press, U.S. Furthermore, Mindfield Publishing, Nigeria, published my poetry collection, ‘Darkness in Crocodileville,’ in 2021. These are all available on Amazon.

I highly recommend the WLF Youth Ambassador Program due to its profound impact on personal and professional development. The program’s mission, aiming to provide 150,000 underprivileged children with their first books, resonated deeply with my passion for education and advocacy. It offered me a platform to extend my reach globally to disadvantaged children and broadened my understanding of education’s transformative potential.

Initiating such programs is vital in addressing educational disparities and fostering global literacy. By empowering youth ambassadors, the program ignites a ripple effect of positive change, moving towards a world free from illiteracy. Early engagement in such initiatives nurtures a generation of changemakers dedicated to building equitable societies.

Since childhood,, I have always been a bookworm who earlier discovered the aromatherapeutic nature of poetry. Books hold immense significance for me; I was so absorbed in my research about how words respond to stimuli. The enduring drive I have for reading and continual learning has consistently kept me motivated. Growing up, I quickly observed that in my country, children or teenagers and youths that come from lower-income backgrounds are generally not educated beyond high school level, and few opportunities exist for them in the workplace.

I became determined to become a writer and a changemaker when I saw the lack of attention to the education concerns of the poor masses in my community. The foundation of my journey began with founding Ikechukwu’s Creative Garden in 2019, an initiative dedicated to motivating Nigerian youth through knowledge, creativity, and positive change. Starting as an online platform sharing poetry and advocating against suicide, Ikechukwu’s Creative Garden has evolved into a mission-driven organization with plans to conduct workshops for skill development and provide financial assistance to underprivileged children and teenagers.

My journey with BOP, from July 2023 to October 2023, was a collaborative effort involving 70 dedicated individuals. We engaged in outreach, participant engagement, marketing, and creative endeavors, showcasing our collective commitment to literacy activism.

The WLF Youth Ambassador Program has profoundly shaped my perspective on effecting societal change and inspired my aspirations in teaching and civic engagement. I envision contributing to Nigeria’s educational revitalization, promoting a reading culture, fostering social equality, and driving economic growth. The program’s support, including recommendation letters facilitating my admission to American graduate schools with scholarships, underscores its immense benefits and potential to empower future leaders
