More than $480K raised for UNC-Chapel Hill frat party, but who is behind the GoFundMe? Students — mostly young men who belong to UNC-Chapel Hill fraternities — hold up the U.S. flag after it was removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Peyton Sickles For WUNC Students — mostly young men who belong to UNC-Chapel Hill fraternities — hold up the U.S. flag after it was removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. As demonstrators protesting against the Israel-Hamas war clashed with law enforcement, community members and others near Polk Place on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill on Tuesday, members of a fraternity seemed to take matters into their own hands. The group of mostly young men — some apparently members of the Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternities — were photographed holding the U.S. flag off the ground after it had been removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one. The images from the scene went viral. A social media post from Guillermo Estrada – who says in his X profile that he is set to graduate from UNC in 2027 – garnered more than 5.2 million views. A photo of the scene was shared by North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd, too. On Wednesday, a GoFundMe was started by John Noonan with the title: “Pi Kappa Phi Men Defended their Flag. Throw 'em a Rager.” A description for the fundraiser referred to protesters as “commie losers” and an “unwashed Marxist horde,” while painting the ones who held up the U.S. flag as “a platoon of American heroes” and “triumphant Brohemians ... fueled by Zyn and White Claws.” Soon, the fundraiser gained steam on social media, too, shared and amplified by country singer John Rich, former Secret Service agent turned right-wing political commentator Dan Bongino, and even former Tar Heels’ men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty. Rich volunteered to perform a concert at the party – publicly reaching out to Estrada – and Bongino said he would do a live broadcast of his show from it. Thursday, the GoFundMe had raised north of $485,000 from more than 14,800 donors. Three donors — identified on the site as John Clark, Adam Sinn, and William Ackman — donated $10,000 each. A Republican congressman from Georgia, Mike Collins, donated $125. But several things remain unclear about the fundraiser. In an email to WUNC on Thursday, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Pi Kappa Phi chapter said they didn’t know who the organizer John Noonan was. “We do not know John Noonan and we have been attempting to get in contact with him,” the fraternity wrote. “Susan Ralston was added as a beneficiary last night, and we also do not know who she is.” Ralston has a deep background in Republican politics, having worked for nearly six years in the George W. Bush White House as a special assistant to the president and deputy to Karl Rove, a senior advisor to Bush and later the deputy chief of staff. She resigned from the Bush administration in 2006 following a report that she had served as a conduit between Rove and lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Recently, Ralston founded Citizens for Responsible Solar, which – according to a 2023 NPR story – has been known to stoke “opposition to solar projects by spreading misinformation online.” In an attempt to reach Ralston, WUNC emailed Citizens for Responsible Solar, which was not immediately returned. Representatives from GoFundMe also did not immediately respond to WUNC’s questions. Noonan is a former advisor to Republican Sen. Tom Cotton on military and defense affairs. He now works for Polaris National Security, which bills itself as “a non-profit organization that advocates for American interests and security in the face of global threats.” An email from WUNC to Polaris was not immediately returned. Like Ralston, Noonan also has deep Republican political ties, having worked as a national security advisor to Jeb Bush's 2016 campaign for president, and as defense policy advisor to Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential run. Noonan was a Fall 2018 fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he has also written for the National Review. His X account turned private on Wednesday. In an email sent to WUNC on Thursday night, Noonan said the fundraiser “started as a modest request to buy a few kegs for some great young guys (that) has ballooned into an American cultural moment.” He also took ownership of the fundraiser, saying it was started independently — despite the use of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity name in its headline. "We aren’t (fraternity) brothers ourselves: just Americans who admire young people like the men of UNC fraternities — members from at least eight different houses, by our count, many of whom we’ve now met," Noonan said. "An independent entity that will include a board of directors, as well as representation from the fraternity organizations themselves, is in the process of being established to keep true to donor intent." Noonan said the campaign plans to stop accepting donations at 11:59 p.m. Thursday. The plan then, Noonan said, is to use the money on “a killer party and give to some great charities.” "With graduation just around the corner, final exams in full swing, and continued drama on campus, we think it is best to take our time and plan this right," Noonan said. "We've had our fun over the past 24 hours." A spokesperson for GoFundMe told the Raleigh News & Observer on Thursday that a member of its “Trust & Safety Team” had reached out to the organizer for more information. “All funds remain safely held by our payment processors during this process, GoFundMe's Cornell Wedge told the N.O. The N.O also reached Ralston, who “acknowledged being asked by GoFundMe organizers to plan the fraternity party” but declined to comment further. A national Pi Kappa Phi spokeswoman told the NO that it did not set up the fundraiser and is not endorsing it. John Pierce, a spokesperson for Alpha Epsilon Pi International Fraternity, told WUNC that the national office has not heard from any of the fundraiser organizers. “The money for that has gone crazy,” Pierce said. “I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. My understanding is that there are members of our fraternity and the other (Pi Kappa Phi) in that photograph.” Pierce said if Alpha Epsilon Pi receives any of the money raised, it will go towards their international philanthropies supporting Jewish and Israeli causes. In contrast to the fraternity fundraiser, a GoFundMe for “Support for UNC Palestine Encampment Arrestees” had raised more than $40,000 from 700 donors as of Thursday evening. It was started by Duke Academics for Justice in Palestine. Police arrested 30 people on Tuesday near Polk Place, most of whom were not students.

Navigating Legal Frontiers: The Implications of Fines on GoFundMe Campaigns Involving Donald Trump In the digital realm of crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe, the intersection of politics and fundraising often gives rise to complex legal and ethical considerations. Recent instances involving campaigns related to former President Donald Trump have brought into focus the issue of fines, raising questions about accountability, transparency, and the limits of political expression in online spaces. The Rise of GoFundMe Campaigns Involving Donald Trump: Donald Trump’s political career has been marked by fervent support from his base and vehement opposition from his detractors. This dichotomy has played out on various online platforms, including GoFundMe, where supporters and critics alike have launched campaigns to fund initiatives aligned with their respective agendas. From legal challenges to policy advocacy, these campaigns have mobilized significant financial resources in support of or in opposition to Trump and his policies. The Limits of Political Expression: The imposition of fines on GoFundMe campaigns involving Donald Trump raises important questions about the boundaries of political expression and activism in the digital age. While individuals have a right to engage in political advocacy and fundraising, they must do so within the confines of the law and in a manner that respects the rights and interests of others. Fines imposed on campaigns for alleged violations serve as a reminder of the legal constraints that govern political activity, even in online spaces where boundaries may be less clear. Conclusion: The issue of fines related to GoFundMe campaigns involving Donald Trump underscores the complex legal and ethical considerations that accompany online political activism and fundraising. While crowdfunding platforms offer powerful tools for mobilizing support and resources, they also carry responsibilities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. GoFundMe to help EHT teen bicyclist critically injured in accident An Egg Harbor Township teen has a long road to recovery after being struck by a tow truck, according to a GoFundMe. Emily Davis, 15, remains in critical condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cooper Health Systems, where she has undergone multiple blood transfusions and surgeries to stabilize her condition, according to the GoFundMe. Davis was riding her bike home from her mother’s salon with her brother and a friend, when she was hit, writes organizer Sarah Harrison. The teen fell before she was hit, and then was run over by the truck’s rear wheels, police have said. The response was quick, according to one witness, who arrived “milliseconds” after the accident. “The police that arrived on the scene were absolutely fantastic,” Carrie Hayes Jorgenson wrote on Facebook. “They came swiftly, they asked all the questions and moved quickly to make the entire areas safe as we were truly partially into the street. The EMTs came and they also were outstanding,” she added. ‘I just want to say how proud I am to be part of a community that works together this way. Because of that, she received her care quickly, which is of the essence in times such as this.” Her injuries include broken legs, fractured pelvis and collapsed lungs, Harrison wrote on the GoFundMe. “The blessing is testing has shown Emily’s brain function remains intact,” she added. Her next surgery will address the repair of her pelvis with the aid of plates and screws.
Family Sets Up GoFundMe for Son Injured in Pasadena Crash That Killed 3 Emerson Newquist expected to make full recovery after car accident that killed three of his friends The family of Emerson Newquist, a 20-year-old Pasadena resident injured in a fatal single-vehicle crash on Saturday, has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover his living and medical expenses during his recovery. Newquist was one of six occupants in a white 2018 Tesla Model 3 that crashed in the 2300 block of Foothill Blvd. at about 2:38 a.m. on May 11, 2024, according to the Pasadena Police Department. The driver, Moheb Samuel, 22, and two male passengers, Stefan Pfeiffer, 20, and an unnamed 22-year-old, all Pasadena residents, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Newquist, along with Bella Ramirez, 18, of Monrovia, and an unnamed 17-year-old female from Pasadena, were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. “Our son, Emerson Newquist, was involved in the fatal crash in Pasadena that occurred the day before Mothers Day,” wrote Kristian Newquist on the GoFundMe page. “Three of his friends lost their lives in the crash, including his 2 roommates and best friends.” Newquist is expected to make a full recovery, though his father noted that “the process will be long and painful, both physically and emotionally.” He was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital Trauma Center and is expected to be released this week. The Pasadena Police Department’s preliminary investigation revealed that the Tesla was traveling westbound on Foothill Blvd. in excess of 100 mph and ran a red light at Sierra Madre Blvd. before striking a curb, crashing through a streetlight, and colliding with a power pole and vacant building. Three passengers not wearing seatbelts were ejected during the crash. “All funds collected will be used for living and medical expenses as he goes through physical therapy and is unable to continue working,” Kristian Newquist wrote on the GoFundMe page.
GO FUND ME FOR U ALBANY STUDENT HIT BY DIRT BIKE NEARS $100K Last week, we received some better news about Alexa Kropf, the University at Albany student hospitalized after she was hit by a dirt bike last month. While acknowledging that there’s still a long road ahead, her father told reporters that she’s now out of a coma and off a ventilator. Shortly after the incident, a good friend of the family named Christina Loper created a GoFundMe page to help Alexa and her family offset some of the exorbitant medical bills, and there’s been an outpouring of generosity. Outpouring of Generosity As of Monday morning, the total amount of cash donations sent to the family was fast approaching six figures, and right now, they’ve received nearly $99,500 of the $102,000 they set as their GoFundMe goal. Lost in the Crowd: The Hidden Biases of Medical Fundraising A new book takes on the spread—and the inequity—of health care crowdfunding. Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. More than 100 million Americans have medical debt, with half owing more than $2,000; disabled people are twice as likely to have it than those without disabilities. Annually, around half a million Americans are pushed into bankruptcy by health care costs. That’s understandably made medical fundraising through websites like GoFundMe appealing, with Americans seeking a combined $10 billion from 2010 to 2018 for health expenses. But publicly asking for financial support can also be a hindrance, affecting how crowdfunders are seen and treated by the wider public—even in a country where most are acutely aware of how health insurance is tied to jobs, and how insurers can fight not to cover many procedures and medications. Between 2016 and 2020, only 12 percent of United States–based GoFundMe medical fundraising campaigns met their goals, according to a 2022 study. More than that, 16 percent of campaigns received no donations at all. One of the study’s authors, University of Washington professor Nora Kenworthy, has taken a dive into the landscape of US medical fundraising in a new book, Crowded Out: The True Costs of Crowdfunding Healthcare. Kenworthy talked to Mother Jones about how the US private health insurance model fuels medical debt, biases that shape who people consider worthy of donations, and what medical fundraising could look like in the future—even if Congress did listen to its constituents and pass legislation enacting a more socialized healthcare system. How has the American private insurance model contributed to the rise of medical fundraising sites like GoFundMe? Crowdfunding for healthcare expenses exists in lots of parts of the world—there are places like the UK and Canada, that have better health systems than we do, where people still rely on crowdfunding for a lot of uncovered healthcare and expenses associated with [it], like child care, that are still hard to pay for. But in the United States, we have a tremendous amount of crowdfunding. That seems to really arise from either things that are not covered by insurance, are covered inadequately, out-of-pocket costs that are incredibly high, or from people who are not insured, or underinsured, when they experience illness or accidents. We live in a very capitalistic country. How does that shape people’s feelings about their own medical debt, asking for help with it, and contributing to other people’s medical expenses? Is it a source of shame, or has it been normalized? “We see crowdfunding reinforcing and amplifying and almost kind of fueling these individual-level judgments of who’s deserving and who’s not.” Some of the kinds of social norms that really are deeply rooted in the United States both push people towards crowdfunding and also make it a really difficult thing for people who most need it to use successfully. We have a very extreme idea of individualism, like, “If you can’t fix it, you’re kind of on your own.” Or that the person with the most merit should win out, even when a lot of the ways that we measure merit are very much linked to privilege and racial identity and class identity and things like that. I write about the way that all these play out in the marketplace of crowdfunding, and get projected onto people’s crowdfunding campaigns. Feelings of shame, particularly about having to start a campaign for yourself, are exceedingly common. In interviews, I’ve also talked with people about the very acute shame that they felt in terms of having to ask for help. On the other hand, starting campaigns for other people is seen as less shameful. If someone starts a campaign for you, then that taps more into this idea of wanting to help each other, and we are also a very charitable society. That is also a result of our very capitalist and neoliberal systems: we rely a lot on each other in order to meet basic needs because so many of us are made vulnerable by these economic systems. As you note in your book, white people’s medical campaigns tend to go viral more often than people of color’s. Can you speak to that? It’s important to say that the top level of racism that’s operating here is really structural racism, and the racial wealth gap, which is enormous in the United States. The way that that comes into play is that campaigns started by or on behalf of people of color, but particularly Black people, tend to do less well than campaigns for other people. There’s also an interpersonal racism and racial bias element that is playing out here, particularly with campaigns that go viral or get lots of exposure. That’s the kind of internalized biases and overt racism that we might bring to the way that we regard and read and look at campaigns that can translate as people viewing campaigns with more suspicion, more tendency to think about them as fraudulent, or more likely to blame the person who’s in need. We see that especially with viral campaigns. I did a research project with some amazing researchers, Aaron Davis and Shauna Elbers Carlisle. What we looked at the top most viral medical campaigns in GoFundMe’s history, and so that was about 900 campaigns that had raised over $100,000. In that group of 900, we found only five were on behalf of Black women, and of those five, two had been started by white people. That, to us, speaks to these incredibly huge disparities that are happening at that more viral level of campaigns, and how people’s campaigns are being treated very differently by the crowd. Genetics, environmental exposure, and poverty can all contribute to the development of chronic health conditions. Yet, it can be harder to fundraise for conditions where some people blame the patient, like those who have Type II Diabetes. How does that shape crowdfunding efforts? The really large structural factors—the neighborhood you live in, or how much money you have, or the air around you—shape the the likelihood of your becoming ill over your lifetime. Particularly when it comes to chronic health conditions, whether that’s diabetes, or congestive heart disease, or cancer; these chronic conditions are very much shaped by big factors that are out of our control. When we’re crowdfunding, we’re often looking for the solvable problem, right? For an individual, [that means] “If I can just give you this one thing, then you’ll be okay.” That’s really hard to deal with in chronic conditions. I talked to a lot of people with diabetes, both Type I and Type II, who are reliant on insulin to survive. It’s really hard to crowdfund for insulin every month. Even when we know that the cost of insulin is absurdly high, and we understand that people need it, and if they don’t get it, they’re truly not going to survive. It’s really hard for people to find ways to use crowdfunding to solve those kinds of ongoing chronic issues. People talk to me about exactly what you’re describing: feeling blamed for their conditions, and feeling like they’re being judged by the crowd for what has happened to them. We see crowdfunding reinforcing and amplifying, and almost kind of fueling, these individual-level judgments of who’s deserving and who’s not. Legislation like Medicare for All could reduce further medical debt—but would it get rid of the need for medical fundraising? Where could we still see it? What we think of as a universal health coverage system not only reduces future medical debt, but could also reduce the amount that people have to pay for certain things like insulin. A more universal system can protect people better in those periods of vulnerability. But we know that illness, particularly acute or severe illness episodes, requires lots of different kinds of social support. There are things that even very well-funded universal health systems do not cover, whether that’s experimental treatments, childcare, or perhaps specialized foods that you might be forced to take. I don’t think we should think of all crowdfunding as bad. It has the potential to meet some important needs that fall outside of formal systems. At the same time, I think we need to remain aware of the ways that crowdfunding in its current form in the US is actually undermining the efforts that are being made to move towards more universal healthcare systems, because it’s reinforcing these ideas that not everyone deserves the same thing. That we’re all individuals, and we’re on our own when we get sick, or the idea that a marketplace mentality can be the best option for fixing these kinds of societal challenges. All of those ideas really run completely counter to the moral ideas that undergird a more universal medical coverage system. Medicare for All is based on the idea that when people are sick, they deserve help, regardless of how good a person they are, what the color of their skin is, or how much they make. It’s the idea that we have a safety net that actually catches everyone. And that idea is just not there in crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is really kind of undermining our commitment to some of these more universal ways of supporting each other. This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
GoFundMe launched for C’mon Everybody repairs Amanda Hatfield Brooklyn venue and queer bar C’mon Everybody is raising money to fund urgent repairs to its stage, basement stairs, and walls. A GoFundMe launched on behalf of owners Eric and Mike by event producer Rachael Pazdan reads: Over the past 10 years, Eric and Mike have developed their venue C’mon Everybody to be a refuge and home base for queer and POC artists and community members to thrive. It’s a platform for artists on the periphery of traditional venue spaces to express themselves, grow their audiences, meet friends and community, and feel seen, taken care of, and safe. C’mon Everybody has also become a beloved space for audiences and patrons to gather, dance, express joy, find new friends, and have fun. They are three-time Glam Awards winners for “Best Bar” and also have won the “Safe Spaces” award from the Courage Awards. It’s no secret that C’mon Everybody is a staple of the queer nightlife and music scene. However, independently running a venue is not easy, and C’mon Everybody needs our urgent help today! A minimum of $5,000 is needed today to fix their stage, which has seen major wear and tear over 10 years. Due to damage (uneven, warped floor and now a hole), there is an urgent need to fix the stage ASAP before it is soon completely unusable. Anything left over from stage repair expenses will also go towards repairing some much-needed fixes on their basement stairs, which leads to the artist’s greenroom. Please, donate whatever you can, no amount is too small. Let’s show Eric, Mike, and C’mon Everybody the love and support they deserve. Thank you for your generosity and solidarity. They’ve since reached their initial $5,000 goal to fix the stage, but they’re continuing the GoFundMe for “a few more days to pay for fixing their basement stairs that lead to the greenroom, as well as a few holes in the walls, and ensuring the space is safe and sound for all to enjoy.” Read the latest update below, and visit the GoFundMe and donate here. Dear Community, We are overwhelmed with profound gratitude, and reaching out to share a deep, heartfelt THANK YOU! Because of your generous support in donations and sharing this fundraiser, we have raised more than $8,000 in just 24 hours, surpassing the $5,000 goal needed to build a new stage. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much. Eric and Mike are overwhelmed with gratitude, and being the humble people that they are, couldn’t have imagined this outpouring of love and support from their community. I am not totally surprised…because we all know how beloved and vital their venue is. We are going to keep the fundraiser up for a few more days, as extra donations are going to pay for fixing their basement stairs that lead to the greenroom, as well as a few holes in the walls, and ensuring the space is safe and sound for all to enjoy. If you have time and feel moved to do so, please continue to share! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Rachael, Eric, and Mike

That was especially true on May 9 when Brenda Duran jumped into the San Joaquin River in central California to rescue her drowning daughter. Why Seniors With Private Health Are Losing Money Health Insurance Comparison | Sponsored The mom watched her children playing in the water of a popular beach, but when her 11-year-old daughter could not keep her head above water, Duran rushed into the river, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. As she sought to save her daughter, Duran “struggled to stay afloat,” the sheriff’s office said, and the river’s current swallowed the mom. Her son, 14, saw his mom in trouble and jumped back into the river to try to grab her, but he could not get to her in time, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. That was around 6:30 p.m. on May 9. First responders, including rescue dive teams, spent hours in the water, but “visibility and safety” concerns forced the search to be paused around 11 p.m., police said. Duran’s body was recovered around 5:30 p.m. on May 11 outside Newman, California. She was just 30 years old. “Brenda’s husband describes her as a ‘very thriving person, always smiling, never giving up and very compassionate,’” Yadira Herrera wrote on a GoFundMe post on behalf of Duran’s family. “Brenda, a young mother full of love and laughter, leaves behind her three children, her husband and her extended family that will forever hold her in her heart.” The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy will be conducted later this week to establish an official cause of death. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brenda Duran during this time,” the sheriff’s office said. The 366-mile San Joaquin River starts in Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks and runs through the San Joaquin Valley south of Sacramento. The river is known for its teeming wildlife, economy-fueled tourism that includes paddling, swimming and fishing, and hydroelectric power.
