More than $480K raised for UNC-Chapel Hill frat party, but who is behind the GoFundMe? Students — mostly young men who belong to UNC-Chapel Hill fraternities — hold up the U.S. flag after it was removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Peyton Sickles For WUNC Students — mostly young men who belong to UNC-Chapel Hill fraternities — hold up the U.S. flag after it was removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. As demonstrators protesting against the Israel-Hamas war clashed with law enforcement, community members and others near Polk Place on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill on Tuesday, members of a fraternity seemed to take matters into their own hands. The group of mostly young men — some apparently members of the Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternities — were photographed holding the U.S. flag off the ground after it had been removed by protestors and replaced with a Palestinian one. The images from the scene went viral. A social media post from Guillermo Estrada – who says in his X profile that he is set to graduate from UNC in 2027 – garnered more than 5.2 million views. A photo of the scene was shared by North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd, too. On Wednesday, a GoFundMe was started by John Noonan with the title: “Pi Kappa Phi Men Defended their Flag. Throw 'em a Rager.” A description for the fundraiser referred to protesters as “commie losers” and an “unwashed Marxist horde,” while painting the ones who held up the U.S. flag as “a platoon of American heroes” and “triumphant Brohemians ... fueled by Zyn and White Claws.” Soon, the fundraiser gained steam on social media, too, shared and amplified by country singer John Rich, former Secret Service agent turned right-wing political commentator Dan Bongino, and even former Tar Heels’ men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty. Rich volunteered to perform a concert at the party – publicly reaching out to Estrada – and Bongino said he would do a live broadcast of his show from it. Thursday, the GoFundMe had raised north of $485,000 from more than 14,800 donors. Three donors — identified on the site as John Clark, Adam Sinn, and William Ackman — donated $10,000 each. A Republican congressman from Georgia, Mike Collins, donated $125. But several things remain unclear about the fundraiser. In an email to WUNC on Thursday, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Pi Kappa Phi chapter said they didn’t know who the organizer John Noonan was. “We do not know John Noonan and we have been attempting to get in contact with him,” the fraternity wrote. “Susan Ralston was added as a beneficiary last night, and we also do not know who she is.” Ralston has a deep background in Republican politics, having worked for nearly six years in the George W. Bush White House as a special assistant to the president and deputy to Karl Rove, a senior advisor to Bush and later the deputy chief of staff. She resigned from the Bush administration in 2006 following a report that she had served as a conduit between Rove and lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Recently, Ralston founded Citizens for Responsible Solar, which – according to a 2023 NPR story – has been known to stoke “opposition to solar projects by spreading misinformation online.” In an attempt to reach Ralston, WUNC emailed Citizens for Responsible Solar, which was not immediately returned. Representatives from GoFundMe also did not immediately respond to WUNC’s questions. Noonan is a former advisor to Republican Sen. Tom Cotton on military and defense affairs. He now works for Polaris National Security, which bills itself as “a non-profit organization that advocates for American interests and security in the face of global threats.” An email from WUNC to Polaris was not immediately returned. Like Ralston, Noonan also has deep Republican political ties, having worked as a national security advisor to Jeb Bush's 2016 campaign for president, and as defense policy advisor to Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential run. Noonan was a Fall 2018 fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he has also written for the National Review. His X account turned private on Wednesday. In an email sent to WUNC on Thursday night, Noonan said the fundraiser “started as a modest request to buy a few kegs for some great young guys (that) has ballooned into an American cultural moment.” He also took ownership of the fundraiser, saying it was started independently — despite the use of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity name in its headline. "We aren’t (fraternity) brothers ourselves: just Americans who admire young people like the men of UNC fraternities — members from at least eight different houses, by our count, many of whom we’ve now met," Noonan said. "An independent entity that will include a board of directors, as well as representation from the fraternity organizations themselves, is in the process of being established to keep true to donor intent." Noonan said the campaign plans to stop accepting donations at 11:59 p.m. Thursday. The plan then, Noonan said, is to use the money on “a killer party and give to some great charities.” "With graduation just around the corner, final exams in full swing, and continued drama on campus, we think it is best to take our time and plan this right," Noonan said. "We've had our fun over the past 24 hours." A spokesperson for GoFundMe told the Raleigh News & Observer on Thursday that a member of its “Trust & Safety Team” had reached out to the organizer for more information. “All funds remain safely held by our payment processors during this process, GoFundMe's Cornell Wedge told the N.O. The N.O also reached Ralston, who “acknowledged being asked by GoFundMe organizers to plan the fraternity party” but declined to comment further. A national Pi Kappa Phi spokeswoman told the NO that it did not set up the fundraiser and is not endorsing it. John Pierce, a spokesperson for Alpha Epsilon Pi International Fraternity, told WUNC that the national office has not heard from any of the fundraiser organizers. “The money for that has gone crazy,” Pierce said. “I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. My understanding is that there are members of our fraternity and the other (Pi Kappa Phi) in that photograph.” Pierce said if Alpha Epsilon Pi receives any of the money raised, it will go towards their international philanthropies supporting Jewish and Israeli causes. In contrast to the fraternity fundraiser, a GoFundMe for “Support for UNC Palestine Encampment Arrestees” had raised more than $40,000 from 700 donors as of Thursday evening. It was started by Duke Academics for Justice in Palestine. Police arrested 30 people on Tuesday near Polk Place, most of whom were not students.
EXPAND ALL CHAPEL HILL A group of UNC fraternity brothers photographed protecting an American flag as it was being pulled from its pole at a Chapel Hill protest has drawn nationwide praise and an online fundraising effort promising an even sudsier award: A “rager” of a party worth more than half a million dollars. Some of the money could be diverted to charity causes, a GoFundMe organizer clarified as the window to donate closed at midnight Thursday with $516,672 raised. Here’s what we know about who is behind the fund-raiser and what all that money could actually go. THE PROTEST AND THE FLAG Protesters set up tents on the Chapel Hill campus starting last Friday, forming a “Gaza Solidarity Camp” that drew hundreds of people and demanded that UNC disclose investments related to Israel and divest from them. Police broke up the camp Tuesday morning and charged 36 people, including 13 students. Later Tuesday, a physical clash broke out when protesters returned to the site on the campus main quad. Protesters removed the large American flag there and replaced it with a Palestinian flag, leading to an hour-long struggle. A GoFundMe page asking for money to support a “rager” for Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at UNC-Chapel Hill after “Brohemians protected Old Glory from the unwashed Marxist horde” reached $516,672 before the organizers closed donations. Screenshot from gofundme.com During that struggle, several students were photographed holding the American flag off the ground, standing in a ring. Many of them were members of UNC’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. (Thread) Yesterday, my fraternity brother @estradguillermo and I were photographed holding up the American flag in the Quad of UNC-Chapel Hill during the protests. Since then, these images have spread, receiving media coverage nationwide. “Today was a sad yet empowering day at Chapel Hill,” wrote Guillermo Estrada in a post on X. “When I walked to class, I saw the Palestinian flag raised on our quad flag pole, and was immediately upset at the act that these ‘protestors’ had made.” A group of counter-protesters hold up an United States flag after pro-Palestinian protesters replaced the flag with a Palestinian flag on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at UNC-Chapel Hill. Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police while the Palestinian flag was removed and the American flag was replaced. Travis Long tlong@newsobserver.com Sen. Ted Budd, the North Carolina Republican, shared a photo of the students holding the flag on X, formerly Twitter, and wrote, “Proud of these UNC students. Right on!” THE FUND-RAISING FOR THE ‘RAGER’ By Wednesday, a GoFundMe page appeared praising Pi Kappa Phi’s flag defense, calling protesters “an unwashed Marxist horde” and raising money to pay for a “rager” party in honor of the “triumphant Brohemian” frat brothers. “Commie losers across the country have invaded college campuses to make dumb demands of weak university administrators,” the post read. “But amidst the chaos, the screaming, the anti-semitism, the hatred of faith and flag, stood a platoon of American heroes. “Armored in Vineyard Vines and Patagonia, fueled by Zyn and White Claws, these triumphant Brohemians protected Old Glory from the unwashed Marxist horde — laughing at their shrieks and wails and shielding the Stars & Stripes from Soviet missiles.” Originally, the post from John Noonan sought $15,000 — a total that would prove modest. AS POST GOES VIRAL, MONEY POURS IN The plea for funds drew donations nationwide — one for $10,000. “America, (heck) yeah boys,” wrote donor Bobby Phillips. “Here’s a case of Miller Lite from a thankful patriot in Indiana.” Country singer John Rich wrote on X that he’d like to perform a free concert “for the boys who protected the American flag at UNC.” The funding goal soon rose to $50,000, then $100,000. By 10 p.m. Thursday, the total had topped $501,000. Three top donors — identified as John Clark, Adam Sinn and William Ackman — gave $10,000 or more. Others included former UNC basketball coach Matt Doherty, who expressed his appreciation for the students on X, and two donors who gave $1,776 each. “We are overwhelmed by you glorious, Patriotic Americans who value good beer and great times,” the organizer said in an update on GoFundMe Wednesday evening. “We are in contact with multiple leaders from fraternities whose members helped defend the flag, including Alpha Epsilon Pi and others, in addition to Pi Kappa Phi.” In a Thursday night update, Noonan said volunteers have offered to provide free entertainment and merchandise to give the fraternity houses — eight in all — “a world class party.” The organizers have also contacted the fraternities and UNC officials about a date, he said. WHAT GOFUNDME SAYS On Thursday morning, a GoFundMe spokesman said the company’s “Trust & Safety Team” had reached out to Noonan for more information. “All funds remain safely held by our payment processors during this process,” Cornell Wedge wrote in a statement. “At GoFundMe, being a safe and trusted place to give and receive help is our top priority. We have a team of experts working around the clock to review fundraisers and work directly with organizers to help prevent misuse and ensure compliance with our Terms of Service. This process includes both a human review from our world-class Trust & Safety experts as well as technical tools designed to catch misuse.” Wedge said the money, once processed, would be “released only to the person named as the recipient of the funds.” “Before funds are transferred to the beneficiary, their personal information must be verified,” the statement said. “If any questions arise, our processors will hold the funds until the recipient is verified.” WHO WILL GET THE MONEY? On Thursday, the GoFundMe page was changed to say “John Noonan is organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Susan Ralston.” Ralston has deep conservative connections, having served as former special assistant to President George W. Bush and former deputy to Karl Rove, who was Bush’s senior advisor until Rove resigned in 2007. She resigned from her post with Rove in 2006, following a House ethics report showing she was a conduit for messages between Rove and lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who later pleaded guilty to conspiracy and other charges related to a corruption investigation. Ralston was never accused of wrongdoing. She now is president of SBR Enterprises in Virginia, which specializes in public relations, event planning, and government and political consulting. alston acknowledged being asked by GoFundMe organizers to plan the fraternity party when The News & Observer reached her by phone Thursday. She declined to comment about the fundraiser or the party. WUNC radio identified Noonan as another former political adviser with conservative ties. Now a senior adviser with Polaris National Security, he is a former U.S. Air Force officer and also former senior counselor for military and defense affairs to Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton. In addition to other roles, he served in two presidential campaigns as national security advisor to Gov. Jeb Bush and as defense policy adviser to Gov. Mitt Romney. WHAT THE FRATERNITY SAYS A national Pi Kappa Phi spokeswoman said Wednesday that the fraternity did not set up the fundraiser and is not endorsing it. In Chapel Hill, the local fraternity said it didn’t know the organizers and was trying to contact them. A FEW ANSWERS FROM THE FUND-RAISER ORGANIZER Reached through GoFundMe, Noonan originally referred questions to Max Meyer, a blogger who describes himself on X as a propagandist and westerner. Meyer did not respond to an email Wednesday, but he effusively praised the fraternity and its flag efforts, posting about it on X: “It was a fraternity alliance that defended the flag. I am in contact with all of the chads. And I’m on my way to North Carolina to bring the story to you.” Noonan said in an update Thursday that a member of the GoFundMe team is working with the organizers to “ensure your donations do as God intended — to show these guys enough fireworks to blow their Oakley aviators straight off their faces.” But not all of the money will pay for kegs and fireworks, he clarified Thursday night. “Fraternities will also have input on sending funds to some great charities in their name, foundations that are consistent with the fundraiser’s patriotic theme,” he said in an update. “A transparent independent entity that will include a board of directors, as well as representation from the fraternity organizations themselves, is in the process of being established to keep true to donor intent.” No word yet on invites. More than $480K raised for UNC-Chapel Hill frat party, but who is behind the GoFundMe? StudentsThrow ’em a Rager’: GoFundMe for UNC frat boys who protected American flag during pro-Palestine protest breaks $400k 'How can I get an invite to this rager?' Photo of Katherine Huggins Katherine Huggins Tech Posted on May 2, 2024 Members of a fraternity at UNC Chapel Hill are about to have a party of a lifetime. After pro-Palestine student protesters on the campus replaced an American flag with a Palestinian flag, members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and other fraternities stepped in to prevent the American flag from touching the ground and being damaged. Images and videos of the boys holding up the flag went viral on social media, prompting many conservatives to praise their actions as those of “true patriots.” A GoFundMe set up to throw the boys a “rager” has raised more than $418,000 in the two days since it was established. “Commie losers across the country have invaded college campuses to make dumb demands of weak University Administrators,” reads the fundraiser’s description, referencing the eruption of pro-Palestine protests on university campuses across the country. “But amidst the chaos, the screaming, the anti-semitism, the hatred of faith and flag, stood a platoon of American heroes,” the description continues. “Armored in Vineyard Vines and Patagonia, fueled by Zyn and White Claws, these triumphant Brohemians protected Old Glory from the unwashed Marxist horde — laughing at their shrieks and wails and shielding the Stars & Stripes from Soviet missiles.” According to GoFundMe, more than 12,000 donations have been received—with one of the top donations, $10,000, coming from billionaire Bill Ackman, who was one of the most vocal critics leading up to the ouster of Harvard University President Claudine Gay as the school grappled with its response to antisemitism on campus. The fundraiser has drawn praise from conservatives online, who agree that the fraternity members deserve to be rewarded for their actions. “I for one, can’t think of a better use for your money at the moment,” commented one X user. “America needed this,” wrote columnist Karol Markowicz. “The UNC frat guys are up to $400K on the GoFundMe!” noted a different columnist. “That’s a hell of a rager! I wanna come!”

Understanding GoFundMe: GoFundMe is a prominent online crowdfunding platform that enables individuals and organizations to create personal fundraising campaigns to gather financial support for a wide range of purposes. Whether it's medical expenses, disaster relief, education, community projects, or entrepreneurial ventures, GoFundMe provides a user-friendly platform that connects fundraisers with potential donors from around the world.

Getting Started with GoFundMe: Setting up a GoFundMe campaign is a straightforward process. Users can create an account on the GoFundMe website or through the mobile app. After signing up, users are guided through a step-by-step process to create a compelling campaign page. This page serves as the central hub for sharing the campaign's story, goals, and progress updates.

Key Features and Benefits: GoFundMe offers several features that make it a popular choice for individuals and organizations seeking financial support:

a) Global Reach: GoFundMe allows fundraisers to tap into a vast network of potential donors worldwide, increasing the chances of reaching fundraising goals. b) Social Sharing: The platform's integration with social media networks enables fundraisers to share their campaigns easily, spreading awareness and maximizing exposure.

c) Customization: GoFundMe provides tools to personalize campaign pages with photos, videos, and compelling narratives, helping fundraisers create an emotional connection with potential donors. d) Donation Options: Donors can contribute to campaigns using various payment methods, including credit cards, PayPal, and mobile payment platforms, making it convenient for individuals to support causes they resonate with.

e) Transparency: GoFundMe offers real-time tracking of donations, allowing both fundraisers and donors to monitor progress and demonstrate accountability. Beyond GoFundMe: Exploring Other Platforms: While GoFundMe is widely recognized and used, it is not the only online fundraising platform available. Numerous alternatives cater to specific niches and causes. Some popular options include Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Patreon, and YouCaring. These platforms offer unique features and varying fee structures, providing flexibility for individuals and organizations to choose the most suitable platform for their fundraising needs.

Impact and Potential: The power of online fundraising extends beyond the platform itself. By leveraging social media, individuals can rally support, engage communities, and inspire others to participate in their cause. Online fundraising platforms facilitate collective action, empowering individuals to make a tangible difference in the lives of others and drive positive change.

In a world where digital connectivity plays an increasingly vital role, online fundraising platforms like GoFundMe have revolutionized the way individuals and organizations raise funds. The ability to connect with a global audience, coupled with user-friendly features and customization options, empowers individuals to amplify their impact and secure the financial support needed to realize their goals. As online fundraising continues to evolve, it opens up new possibilities for creating positive change and building stronger communities.

For those who want their hearts broken, the story of Zohar and Gabi Ilinetsky, the parents of one-year-old twins, is a world to live inside. Zohar: twenty-seven, confident, and voluble, a construction project manager proud of his work. Gabi: fastidious, attentive, academic, an early-education specialist who used to work at a preschool. They met in Israel, where he grew up, and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, her childhood home. While dating, they would speak often about the parenting styles that they hoped to have. “We’re old-school people,” Zohar told me recently. “My friends now are waiting until thirty-five to start thinking about kids, but always we knew we were going to get married. We knew we were going to have children.”

To their delight, Gabi gave birth to twins: a boy, a girl. They called the children Yoel and Yael. Zohar, who does not believe in baby talk, had long, one-sided conversations with his newborn children, in Hebrew; he thought that they could understand him, or soon would. Before long, his son did the most precocious thing an infant can and rolled over. It was while watching Yoel roll on the floor one day, chatting to him as if to a middle-aged man, that Zohar noticed a fleeting peculiarity in his son’s eyes, which seemed to flicker back and forth, like the pupils of somebody trying to read a subway-station sign through the window of a moving train.

Until then, doctors had assured the Ilinetskys that the babies were healthy. Gabi took Yoel to the pediatrician, who told her not to worry, that Yoel seemed fine. But Gabi worried. She went to a second pediatrician, and a third. The Ilinetskys buy family insurance through the Kaiser Permanente network, and it costs them about fifteen hundred dollars a month. Against the pediatricians’ counsel, Gabi demanded a referral to a specialist, and Yoel underwent an MRI and other tests. At four months, he was given a diagnosis of Canavan disease, which causes rapid degeneration of the brain and, almost always, death in childhood. For a while, his parents were in shock. “After shock,” Zohar said, “comes depression.”

Infants born with Canavan seem normal at first, but they lack an enzyme crucial for the growth of white matter, the myelin layer that protects and connects neurons in the brain. Signals cross—Yoel had his first seizure at ten weeks—and motor control decays. Canavan babies typically lose the ability to hold their heads up. Their intellectual development falls off; they never learn to talk. Before long, a thickening agent had to be added to Yoel’s bottles, because his weakening swallow and gag reflexes made him prone to choking. He had to be vigilantly burped, because his digestive tract lacked normal muscle activity. The recessive gene for Canavan, as for the better-known Tay-Sachs disease, crops up most often in the Ashkenazi Jewish population, and Gabi and Zohar found that they were both carriers—meaning that any children they conceived would have a one-in-four chance of being born with the disease. With Yoel, some signs had always been there: his precocious rolling, for example, came from spastic tensing in his muscles. But now the Ilinetskys worried about Yael.

Testing showed that Yael had Canavan, too. Until then, the Ilinetskys had thought of themselves as a couple with two children, one with special needs and one without. Now they were facing the terminal brain decay of both kids. Through their own research, the Ilinetskys found a physical-therapy program called NeuroMovement, which purports to cultivate brain plasticity. Six days a week, Gabi drove the twins two hours across the Bay, from Concord to Marin County, for an hour and a half of treatment, and then drove back.

The Ilinetskys said that the therapy shows signs of success: Yael can reach out, grab toys, and do other things that many Canavan babies can’t, and Yoel seems more alert. Beyond the daily therapy, Zohar and Gabi have pinned their hopes on a gene-replacement treatment being developed by Paola Leone, a neuroscientist at Rowan University, in New Jersey. Leone’s team aims to replace the mutated gene in Canavan patients with a normal version, packaged in a special virus that “infects” primarily white-matter cells. The procedure, one of several gene-therapy protocols in development for Canavan patients, has been effective in rodents; it is awaiting funding and F.D.A. approval to enter Phase I trials.

For the Ilinetskys, the challenge was cost. They pay three thousand dollars a week for NeuroMovement, which is considered experimental and therefore isn’t covered by insurance. Leone, meanwhile, needs $3.5 million to fund a clinical trial of her treatment for a group of Canavan children, potentially including Yoel and Yael. Frustrated with the system, the Ilinetskys decided to go outside it. “We thought maybe we could buy a few thousand lottery tickets,” Zohar said, grimly.

Instead, in December, they requested two million dollars on the Internet fund-raising platform GoFundMe. “We need your help,” Gabi wrote on their campaign page, which included pleas in Hebrew, Russian, and Spanish. Through donations mostly from strangers, they raised more than a quarter of a million dollars in the first two months.

Crowdfunding, or raising money without pursuing donors individually, isn’t new; consider bake sales, telethons, or the Salvation Army drum. But the endeavor, like sharing photographs and shopping, has gained form and focus in an age of digital connection. On the Internet, crowdfunding is distinguished by its scale. As of 2017, GoFundMe alone had raised five billion dollars. That money has helped many of its users, and it has helped the company grow.

GoFundMe was officially founded, in 2010, by Andy Ballester and Brad Damphousse, who had met at a text-messaging startup. Since then, the company has hosted more than two million fund-raising campaigns in nineteen countries, joining other platforms, such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Unlike those, GoFundMe is associated with causes more than it is with projects, in part because it has a history of offering relief in disaster zones. On June 12, 2016, after a gunman opened fire at the Pulse night club, in Orlando, a GoFundMe campaign was started for victims and their families. A hundred and nineteen thousand people donated, raising almost eight million dollars. In late 2017, the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund launched a campaign for victims of sexual assault, raising about twenty-five million dollars. All of this followed Taylor Swift’s use of the platform, in 2015, to send fifty thousand dollars to a blond girl with leukemia, an act that inspired GoFundMe to raise individual-donation maximums from fifteen thousand dollars to fifty thousand dollars.

Owing to such magic-seeming intercessions, GoFundMe has acquired a wishing-well mystique. The sorts of help that people seek, meanwhile, trace the profile of American need. A third of the money raised on GoFundMe in 2017 was for medical expenses. This isn’t surprising, given that the United States has the highest over-all health-care costs in the developed world. Since 2008, health-insurance deductibles have increased eight times as quickly as wages. A study in The American Journal of Medicine last fall found that 42.4 per cent of the 9.5 million people diagnosed with cancer between 2000 and 2012 had depleted their assets within two years. Like the vase between the faces in the famous optical illusion, GoFundMe has become a negative-space portrait of our country’s teetering medical finances, a repository for the costs that patients and underwriters cannot or will not cover on their own.

Starting a GoFundMe campaign is easy. Users select from categories that follow the seasons of a human life: “education,” “competition,” “newlywed,” “business,” “family,” “community,” and so on; then, less cheerfully, “medical,” “emergency,” and “memorial.” They title the campaign and enter a target amount. (“If you’re not sure where to start,” the platform offers, try a thousand dollars.) Then they upload a photo or a video and, in a box labelled “Tell your story,” lay out their predicaments. GoFundMe used to take a five-per-cent commission, but since 2017 it has waived that fee for personal fund-raising in the United States. (A 2.9-per-cent charge still goes to payment processors.)

The platform has the familiar social-media effect of publicizing private struggles. Patterns emerge. A common theme among medical fund-raisers is feeling locked out of the system: not knowing whom to call next, or how to push past a bureaucratic blockade, or whether there are any options left. Class in the United States is commonly framed in terms of money or profession, but those things fluctuate in the course of an adult American life in a way that class usually does not. A more telling index of class is access to opportunity—one’s sense of how to begin to begin, one’s social sphere. The true mark of class vulnerability today isn’t the capacity to run out of money but the capacity to run out of options. In the blind alleys of public health, GoFundMe has become both a first stop and a last resort.

“When we started the fund-raising campaign, it was something that I personally didn’t feel comfortable with,” Zohar Ilinetsky told me when I visited him and Gabi at home one morning. He worried that people would mistake him for a taker of handouts. “I’m a capitalist to the bone,” he said. “But, when it comes to medicine, this is wrong—it’s inhumane. It’s like telling someone, ‘When you die, you’ll lie on the street, because you don’t have money for a funeral.’ ”

In Israel, he said, everyone has free coverage for all expected medical needs, from preventive care to transplants and mental health. “I remember, even as a kid, hearing people talking about how horrible the medical system in America was,” he told me. Bearded and stocky, Zohar has a lilting baritone and an open, histrionic personality that comes across as charming. Gabi—auburn hair, leggings—smiled as he expounded his case with flailing arms. She was the one who had convinced him that GoFundMe was worth trying. “I just didn’t have any other choice,” Zohar explained.

Concord, northeast of Oakland, is the kind of California suburb in which every block feels like a poured pancake and no one can get anywhere on foot. The Ilinetskys’ house, white and one level, shouldered up against a large garage. A sculpted sign on the front door read “mishpachat ilinetsky”—the Ilinetsky family. Another, above the doorbell, displayed twin revolvers with crossed barrels and read “we don’t call 911.”

Inside, Gabi had been preparing a bottle for Yoel. She settled in with him on her lap, gently holding up his head, as if to puppet a stuffed animal that had gone floppy from love. After a while, Yael woke in the next room and cried. Gabi went to get her, and Zohar took Yoel. The baby had large blue eyes and blond hair—“my little Swedish guy,” Zohar called him.

While the twins were being diagnosed, Zohar had taken days off work for their appointments. “I had to personally go and fight for every damn test,” he said. The twins’ care kept Gabi from working, too, and the couple worried about finances. They sought help from In-Home Supportive Services, a state program that arranges household aid for disabled people, and Supplemental Security Income, the federal program that provides extra support in cash. Determining eligibility was projected to be an eighteen-month process.

Shop “I learned that there are lawyers and other people whose job it is to understand and translate to families and push paperwork through the system,” Gabi said. “But those people cost money.” “Again, we are not poor people,” Zohar added. “We are not out of work. I started working three days after I came to America. Ask in our community!”

“That’s what the system is supposed to be for,” Gabi said. “For people like us, who are hit with unforeseen circumstances and who can’t manage alone.”

On GoFundMe, the Ilinetskys worked their own system. For years, they had been active members of the local Jewish community, and now they tried to use that network to bolster their campaign. Their synagogue, Chabad of Contra Costa County, agreed to collect the GoFundMe contributions, making them, in theory, tax deductible for donors. A marketing-video firm to which Zohar had tossed work returned the favor by making Web documentaries about the family. Friends and relatives in Israel amplified their campaign on social media. “You know how you know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody?” Zohar said. “That’s how it went.”

Pi Kappa Phi made $60K (so far) off of yesterdays protests Haven't seen it posted in many places, but I think the campus community should be aware that Pi Kappa Phi is (allegedly) profiting off of yesterdays clash with protesters on campus. Specifically due to the US flag being taken down and replaced by the Palestinian flag. Their GoFundMe is currently at $63K and climbing in less than 4hrs since it launched. These funds are supposedly going to throw them a large party as the description reads. I know people are free to donate their money to whom ever they see fit to, but something about this just doesn't sit well with me. I could understand if they're donating this money to an organization or some sort of cause, but that's clearly not the case here. I frankly find it a disgrace that they're profiting off of these events. I won't be posting the GoFundMe link since it's easy enough to find with some searching, and because I do not support their fundraiser. EDIT: The person running this fundraiser may or may not be associated with Pi Kappa Phi. I think that a statement from the leadership of Pi Kappa Phi should help to clear this up. EDIT 2: A source at WRAL has reached out to the fundraiser organizer for additional information. EDIT 3: I've contacted GoFundMe to request a review of this fundraiser in lieu of the fact that the money raised may not be going to the aforementioned group (Pi Kappa Phi). I've suggested that UNC, Pi Kappa Phi, and the fundraiser organizer be contacted and engaged in conversation around this. WRAL has updated the original article after hearing back from Maureen Walker, the chief marketing officer for Pi Kappa Phi. They stated that "Pi Kappa Phi is not involved with the GoFundMe fundraiser you are referencing, and no money has been given to the fraternity," An additional article posted by WUNC 95.1 addresses some of the concerns with the fundraiser, specifically around who the organizers might be. Nothing has been confirmed, and Pi Kappa Phi has so far unsuccessfully reached out to the fundraiser organizer to gain further information. A national spokesperson for Pi Kappa Phi has stated that "We did not set up the fundraiser and we are not endorsing it" - https://www.wunc.org/news/2024-05-02/unc-frat-party-fundraiser-protest-gofundme-ralston-noonan GoFundMe responded to comment by the Raleigh News and Observer stating that their Trust & Safety team has reached out to the fundraiser organizer for more information. Consider memorializing the departed with meaningful gestures like "donations in memory of deceased" or "als donation in memory of." For those grieving the loss of a mother, offering "condolence gifts for loss of mother" or "sympathy gifts" can be a heartfelt way to show support. Similarly, for the departure of a cherished pet, "dog death gifts," "pet loss presents," and "gifts in memory of a pet" are thoughtful tokens that acknowledge the unique bond shared with animal companions. In remembrance of a father, "remembrance gifts for loss of father" can offer solace, while "unique gifts for loss of loved one" provide a personal touch during times of mourning. If you prefer an alternative to traditional flowers, consider "funeral gifts instead of flowers" to contribute to the memorial in a meaningful way. For those who wish to make a lasting impact, "donation gifts in someone's name" or "donate a well in someone's name" serve as enduring tributes. A noble choice may be "city of hope donations in memory of" or supporting causes like "jdrf donation in honor of someone" or "donate to spca in memory of." In essence, these gestures, ranging from "bereavement gifts for loss of father" to "memorial remembrance gifts," embody the compassion and empathy needed to navigate the challenging journey of grief. Each act of kindness becomes a tribute, preserving the memory of the departed and providing comfort to those left behind.
