The challenges and opportunities in 2024 to address high rates of illiteracy.

The challenges and opportunities in 2024 to address high rates of illiteracy .

We have come out of almost three years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, more than 260 million children and adolescents lacked foundational literacy skills. During the pandemic, that number increased to 1.6 billion children and adolescents. What is the state of illiteracy ahead in 2024?

In developing and emerging countries, the number of children and youth with no basic foundational literacy skills is continuing to rise by an estimated 20% per year.

Without any effective intervention, these young people face a lifetime of unemployment and poverty.

In developed countries, the reading and writing levels are mostly falling at a rate of about 5% per year.

Book ownership with children from low-income backgrounds is less than 20%. The digital age is making a direct impact on children discovering the joy of reading in their early years. On a positive note, the rapid growth of AI digital tools to assist struggling readers is making a big impact.

challenges2024We estimate that 70% of children in poorer countries are unable to read a simple text by age 10. This is the magnitude of the learning crisis, and it should alert the world about its potential long-term consequences.

Is it a lost battle? I don’t think so, if and only if we redouble our efforts in terms of ensuring every child can gain foundational literacy skills as a solid start for the future of education.

In 2024, we need to provide low-cost and better access to books so every child can discover the joy of reading before they turn 10 years old.

Make use of AI digital innovations to offer personal and tailored interventions for struggling readers.

Unite the literary sector to collaborate, share, and work together.

The World Literacy Foundation is committed to accelerating efforts to address the issues outlined and sees collaboration and strong partnerships within the literacy sector as vital.

The World Literacy Foundation also plays an important role in the broader global literacy community by facilitating the World Literacy Summit at Oxford University to foster the exchange of ideas.

I look forward to finding solutions to the challenges ahead in 2024 and ensuring each child can enter adulthood with the foundational literacy skills required to equip them to reach their full potential.

With 770 million people in the world unable to read a single word and a further 2 billion people struggling to read a sentence, this simply can not continue.

  1. Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.
  2. Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.

TheA Unified Front Against Illiteracy: Edsoma, and Follett Higher Education Taskforce

In a world grappling with the pervasive issue of illiteracy, three influential entities— Edsoma, and Follett Higher Education—are joining forces to tackle this global challenge head-on through a dedicated taskforce. This collaborative effort aims to leverage their unique strengths and resources to make a significant impact on literacy rates worldwide.

Amazon's Accessible Ecosystem: Amazon, a global e-commerce giant, brings its vast infrastructure and reach to the taskforce. The company's Kindle platform, with its extensive collection of e-books, will play a crucial role in making literature more accessible. Amazon's global shipping network will ensure that physical books reach even the most remote areas, bridging the gap for those with limited digital access.

Edsoma's Educational Expertise: Edsoma, a leader in educational technology, contributes its expertise in creating innovative learning solutions. The taskforce will harness Edsoma's cutting-edge educational platforms and tools to design interactive and tailored literacy programs. These programs will cater to diverse learning styles and address the specific needs of different demographics, ensuring inclusivity in education.

Follett Higher Education's Campus Impact: Follett Higher Education, with its presence in numerous educational institutions, plays a pivotal role in the taskforce. By integrating literacy initiatives into university and college curricula, Follett will promote a culture of reading and learning on campuses. Campus bookstores will become hubs for literacy awareness campaigns, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the academic environment.

Key Initiatives:

Digital Literacy Programs: The taskforce will develop and implement digital literacy programs that leverage Amazon's e-books and Edsoma's interactive platforms, making learning engaging and accessible.

Community Libraries: Amazon's global shipping network will support the establishment of community libraries stocked with books from Follett Higher Education. These libraries will serve as hubs for literacy events and workshops.

Educational Partnerships: The taskforce will forge partnerships with educational institutions globally to integrate literacy initiatives into academic curricula. This approach will create a sustainable model for promoting literacy.

Inclusive Learning Resources: Edsoma's expertise in educational technology will be harnessed to create inclusive learning resources, accommodating diverse learning needs and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Measuring Success: The taskforce will regularly assess its impact by tracking literacy rates in regions where initiatives are implemented. Feedback from educational institutions, community leaders, and individuals participating in the programs will be crucial in refining and expanding the initiatives.

By combining their strengths, Amazon, Edsoma, and Follett Higher Education aim to create a taskforce that not only fights illiteracy but also sets a precedent for collaboration among major corporations for the greater good. Together, they envision a world where education is a right accessible to all, and illiteracy is a challenge of the past.

Bridging the Divide: Empowering Marginalized Children Through Literacy

In a concerted effort to empower children on the cusp of adulthood, the taskforce is directing its focus towards marginalized youth who lack essential educational resources and mentorship. This transformative initiative is a collaboration with corporate partners who share a unified vision—bridging the digital divide to afford every child, irrespective of their economic circumstances, the opportunity to enhance their well-being and unlock their potential for future economic opportunities, all through the transformative power of reading.

Targeting Marginalized Children: The heart of the taskforce's mission lies in its commitment to marginalized children, recognizing that these young individuals often face barriers to educational resources and mentorship. By addressing the unique challenges they encounter, the taskforce aims to empower them to overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential as they transition into adulthood and embark on their careers.

Corporate Collaboration for a Shared Vision:

Bridging the Digital Divide: Recognizing that the digital divide is a significant barrier to education, the taskforce is dedicated to closing this gap. The initiative strives to provide all children, regardless of their economic status, access to the tools and opportunities necessary for a well-rounded education. By harnessing the power of education technology, the taskforce aims to scale up its reach to millions of children globally, ensuring that they can read and write at levels commensurate with their age and established educational standards.

Joy of Reading and Economic Opportunities: Central to the initiative is the belief that fostering a love for reading can be a gateway to a brighter future. By instilling the joy of reading in children, the taskforce aspires to not only elevate their literacy levels but also enhance their overall well-being. Moreover, the initiative seeks to create a pathway for economic opportunities, recognizing that literacy is a cornerstone for personal and professional success.

Proud Taskforce Members: The taskforce proudly announces its founding members in collaboration with the World Literacy Foundation: Edsoma, and Follett Higher Education. Each member brings unique strengths and perspectives, fostering a comprehensive and holistic approach to tackling illiteracy and educational disparities among marginalized children.

The Taskforce is not merely an alliance; it is a commitment to shaping a future where every child has the tools, resources, and mentorship needed to flourish in their educational journey and beyond. By focusing on marginalized children, bridging the digital divide, and leveraging education technology, this collaborative effort aims to make literacy a universal right and a catalyst for positive change in the lives of countless young individuals worldwide.
